A life in flowers

A Life in Flowers is an interactive virtual reality experience and fine art installation powered by the participant’s own voice.

At Shaking Earth Digital, we developed a procedural mesh generation for flowers blooming, leaf growth and most notably the cactus growth. This project was built for Director Armando Kirwin, and it was selected for Venice Film Festival 2019.

I researched different varieties of flowers, time lapses of flowers blossoming and the math behind nature. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Algorithmic_Beauty_of_Plants

We used Unity’s High Definition Render Pipeline for VR and shaders with subsurface-scattering properties for the flowers and leaves.

For speech recognition we used Google’s speech-to-text api and a sentiment analysis tool called Wonderfriend. The sentiment analysis tool analyzes various adjectives a user uses and assigns an emotion with every partial speech result. The bouquet spawns a new flower based on the user’s answers making this an unique experience.
